Col. John WheelerCivil War Re-enactors - Living History

Company B of the 20th Indiana Volunteer Infantry was composed of men from Lake County, Indiana. In 1861 John Wheeler of Crown Point formed 100 men for service. After being mustered into service in Lafayette, Indiana they were designated “ Company B”. John Wheeler was commissioned as their Captain. As the war progressed Captain Wheeler rose to the rank of Colonel and Commander of the 20th.

Colonel Wheeler led the 20th at the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. On July 2, 1863 the 20th regiment was engaged in heavy combat at Gettysburg on the Rosewood Ridge when Colonel Wheeler, while on horseback directing his line of battle, was fatally shot.

The Re-Enactors of Company B of the 20th Indiana Volunteer Infantry preserve the history and memories of the men of Lake County who answered their countries call to restore the union. Company B is a family oriented group and welcomes all those interested in joining our ranks. This is your Call to Arms!!
